Joint declaration of Hans-Gert Poettering, Chairman of the EPP-ED Group in the European Parliament, and József SZÁJER, leader of the Hungarian Delegation in the EPP-ED Group.
The EPP-ED Group of the European Parliament has learned with concern that the Romanian authorities organising the local elections on 6 June 2004 have rejected the Hungarian Civic Union as an eligible party for purely legalistic reasons.
The EPP-ED Group has several times expressed concern about Romania not applying properly the Copenhagen criteria. Limiting the freedom of elections, implementing restrictions of electoral rules as well as raising the electoral threshold unjustifiably are – each one of these measures separately as well as together – completely contrary to the electoral rules and practices of the European Union.
The disqualification of the Hungarian Civic Union from the elections for local authorities in Romania justifies our repeated expressions of concern regarding Romania’s preparation to join the European Union.
