In the framework of his tour in the counties joining the EU on 1 May, the Chairman of the EPP-ED Group in the European Parliament, Mr Hans-Gert Poettering, visited Cyprus, on 5 April 2004.
Mr Poettering met with the Democratic Rally’s Chairman, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, as well as with members of the Executive Board of the Party.
Mr Poettering also visited the village of Pyla, the only village in Cyprus which is inhabited by both Greek and Turkish Cypriot citizens. During his visit to Pyla, Mr Poettering, met with the local authorities and talked to the people of the village about the future prospects of Cyprus in the EU as well as the Cyprus settlement.
During his one-day visit to the island, Mr Poettering also met with the former President of the Republic, Mr Glafkos Clerides with whom he exchanged views and opinions about the current situation of the Cyprus problem and about the chances of the forthcoming referenda, on 24 April 2004, in the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities, respectively.
During the press conference, Mr Poettering said that the decision on how to vote in the forthcoming referendum of the 24 April, lies with the people of Cyprus and should be based on their knowledge and understanding. He also underlined that in the case of a positive outcome, the EPP-ED Group will stand supportively at the side of Cyprus in order to achieve the successful implementation of the settlement reuniting the island.
