In messages to José María Aznar, Prime Minister of Spain, and to Mariano Rajoy, Leader of the Partido Popular, the Chairman of the EPP-ED Group in the European Parliament, has repeated his expressions of „solidarity and heartfelt condolences with the entire Spanish people“ on the terrorist atrocities committed in Madrid on 11 March, 2004.
Referring to the possible intentions of terrorists to influence the elections, Hans-Gert Poettering said, „we must stand together to prevent a dictatorship of terrorism in the free world“.
Messages to the two Spanish leaders were also sent from Wilfried Martens, Chairman of the EPP. He again sympathised with the Spanish people on the terrible atrocities committed in Madrid last week.
Turning to the general election results, Mr. Martens said that: „The 14 March, 2004 will go down in European history as a traumatic event inasmuch as Islamic fundamentalism was seen as dictating the outcome of a European election… a deeply sad outcome no matter what one’s political beliefs“.
Today the European Parliament, along with people all over Europe, held a three minute silence to honour the victims of Madrid and terrorism everywhere.
